LUMINOUS ORGANISM

2025 A catwalk with luminous mushrooms, a dress lit by the tentacles of a squid. Everywhere tiny lights that sparkle and shine. A real catwalk-fairytale inspired by nature. Not happened yet, but a fanciful future look, inspired by the fact that the smallest organisms in nature can provide the greatest effects.

The artist Friedrich van Schoor and Tarek Mawad made a fairy tale-like video. They used mapping project to create an enchanting forest, by projecting light on trees, mushrooms and frogs. In this way they highlight the beauty of nature. They found inspiration for this video in the phenomenon of bioluminescence *, which is mostly found in the deep-sea. They recreated this enlightening effect and brought it into the forest.

We can use bioluminescence to light- and colour up our lives. Something we have seen in the Ambio lamp designed by Teresa van Dongen. She created a lamp powered by bioluminescent bacteria usually found on octopuses. A special kind of light that takes us into a magical world.

We are heading for a future where technology and nature become increasingly intertwined together. Living organisms will be connected to technology and vice versa. The connection between fashion and living organism we saw already in biocouture. But when will be the first day that the catwalk will sparkle by the influence of bioluminescence?
