Last week I visited Strijp S, an innovative district in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Previously, this area was the business park of Philips. Meanwhile this district is transformed into a place where creativity, innovation and cooperation are important values. Because of the small business owners, hangouts and lofts that are present, it is the perfect place for the modern urbanite.
All the old workstations and factories in Strijp S, have a raw, industrial yet modern look. Just imagine the lights without shade or directly from the construction side, raw materials, the use of pallets and walls with imperfections. But also vintage plays an important role. So I saw vintage shops, but also the use of vintage materials such as old furniture and faded carpets. Strijp S reflects the change that is currently taking place in the interior of many households. The look that Strijp S owns is created in homes and apartments that are “officialy” not industrially. With rugged materials like steel, iron, metal, copper, wood and neutral colors a raw look will be created.
On Strijp S is a shopping center called “Urban Shopper” located. An ultimate hotspot for the creative urbanite. A place for emerging initiatives. You will find there industrial furniture, sustainable care products, vintage, unique (handmade) clothes/accessories and lots of design. The look of this shopping center reminded me of the British fashion retailer “Urban outfitters”. But also in other stores, I see more often small elements of this urban interior.
So it is clear that the industrial, raw yet modern look is increasingly seen in households, hangouts and shops. Perhaps we may see this “interior change” as an aversion against the ruling perfection that we often see in the innercity. This modern industrial interior reflects the fact that imperfection can be perfect.
