ARTISTIC URBAN

Do you know that places? That old abandoned ugly parts of the city, places you would rather not be. Recognizable by impoverished stretches of land, abandoned houses and a whole lot of trash… I can see the solution for spots like this in art.

Worldwide there are more and more artists who use their creativity to pimp void spots in town. They try to make the ugly parts of the city more liveable trough art. The materials they use or the underlying message often consistent with sustainability. With these message they want to make a statement against today’s society.

I discovered “Moss Graffiti”. Artist Anna Garfoth is using moss as her medium for graffiti artworks. With this new kind of typography she has transformed moss into street-art. She did this to promote sustainability in urban areas. This form of graffiti is part of “Guerrilla Gardening”. Guerrilla Gardening stands for activities aimed to achieve more green space in urban environments. Besides graffiti we see many other ways of (sustainable) street art. Like “Yarn Bombing”, where trees or vehicles are being knitted. Or “street repairs”, where broken parts of streets and walls are filled with color, for example with lego pieces.

We see a number of key values ​​in the signal that I have mentioned: Artistic urban. Namely innovation, sustainability, creativity and commitment. In a world where cities are getting bigger and urbanization is an important trend, we have to respect these values​​. We’ll have to think of creative solutions in order to keep the cities livable and innovative. I think the Artistic Urban are indispensable in a world where creativity and urbanization is increasingly important. Therefore, I would urge all artists to become an artistic urban, to make cities a lot more beautiful!
