It’s clear “Urban farming” has become a familair concept. Cities are using undeveloped pieces of land to cultivate crops. And urbanites do have vegetable gardens on their balconies. It seems like urban people have the need to grow their food at unexpected places.
In London they found something new. The Britisch company Zero Carbon Food would like to use bunkers from the second war as a greenhouse for herbs and plants. The underground garden consists of “tables” in which salads and herbs are growing hydroponically. The team would like to grow here all year by using LED lights. So they are not dependent on seasons. We can say that this project is really sustainable because they are saving in water and transportation.
At this moment Zero Carbon Food is operating in a test garden at one of the London bunkers. But the Britisch company have plans to expand this project further. They want to use the various bunkers in London, but also other abandoned places like old subway stations. This project is very expensive, so unfortunately it’s not feasible yet. To save money Zero Carbon Food have invoked help from a crowdfuningssite.
Isn’t it COOL that London can be provided in salad and herbs in a sustainable way. People who would like to buy these products, are fully aware of the origin of their product. If they go on internet they can exactly see where and how their food is made. The way in which these salad and herbs are being produced is completely transparent. I think and hope that this company is going to expand in the FUTURE. The current consumer is in need of transparent products. And besides this, the sustainable thing plays a major role.
