BLURRING GENDER

At the London Fashionweek J.W Anderson showed his runway collection at 7 januari. The men collection consists of tight blouses, ruffles, leather, handbags and heeled shoes. The collection of J.W. Anderson is a reflection of what’s going on in our society. Just go back in time, men were bosses and woman were housewives or secretary. The last century the roles between man and woman changed a lot. The work environment of men has changed. They are not just working as a boss or industry employee, but they are taking the “female jobs” such as receptionist, secretary for granted.

But when J.W. Anderson is speaking about the fact that his collection is not about gender, I do not agree. His collection is certainly not androgynous. This collection seems more feminine than masculine. J.W. Anderson does reflect the fact that mens are acting more feminine these days. He emphasisez the changing social role and therefore the changing appearance of men.

Nowadays I see an emerging change when we talk about appearance and gender. There are a lot more Androgynious, feminine and masculine collections during the last fashionweeks. Models are becoming more androgynous and collections are often unisex. Isn’t it COOL that we see a blurring between gender. We are moving into an era where it doesn’t matter which gender you are and you can be whoever you want to be. This has to do with the trend individualism. Currently we see androgyn mostly on the catwalk and by dint of unisex clothing. In the FUTURE androgyn will be more and more translated to the street. In a couple of years no one is looking at gender, but we will look at someone’s personality.
